What Makes Lachlan Merinos Different?
History & What Makes Lachlan Merinos Different?
2026 Season News
Throughout the past 12 months, there has been a renewed sense of excitement across the Australian sheep industry. Strong sheep and lamb markets have continued to reward producers, while the wool market has improved significantly, reaching its highest levels since 2019 and still rising.
It is very exciting to see confidence returning to the industry and rewarding those producers who have remained committed to breeding balanced, productive, profitable sheep through all market conditions.
The past few years have reinforced the value of maintaining a balanced breeding approach. Merino breeders who have focused on producing sheep that perform across all income streams have continued to generate the strongest returns through sheep and lamb sales, with wool providing the constant backbone of their enterprises. Now, with confidence returning to the wool market, those persistent breeders are well positioned to capitalise on the huge opportunities ahead, enabling breeders to bank on two commodities in one year, wool and meat!
At Lachlan Merinos, our breeding philosophy has always been centred around balance and commercial relevance. We believe producers should not have to choose between fertility, growth, carcass performance and wool production. Our objective is to breed a balanced sheep that excels across all income streams, positioning our clients to take advantage of every market opportunity available to them. Whether returns are being driven by wool, surplus sheep, prime lambs or breeding stock, our focus remains on delivering genetics that maximise profitability and resilience.
To achieve this, we continue to invest heavily in genetic improvement through Embryo Transfer (ET), Artificial Insemination (AI) and comprehensive performance recording. Every stud lamb born on the property is DNA tested and measured, with parentage, genomics and performance data collected throughout its lifetime. This information allows us to identify animals that excel in the traits that drive profitability. Combined with disciplined visual assessment and strict classing for structure, functionality, conformation and heavy-cutting, high-quality wool, we believe this balanced approach delivers meaningful and reliable genetic progress.
We were excited to be named by THE LAND, No. 1 Merino Stud in Australia for 2025, highlighting our ongoing commitment to the quality and improvement of our sheep, as we continue to push forward with innovation, genetic advancements, and a focus on commercial realities. We’re also proud to share that 17 of the 50 Merino Studs have recently used Lachlan genetics.
Additionally, Lachlan Merinos were the No.1 Merino Stud for Semen Sales, with 3350 doses sold in Australia, demonstrating that Lachlan genetics are highly sought after in the Merino Industry.
